The Fruit of Connection

Published 16 days ago • 1 min read

Hi Friends,

Last week we talked about the humility of Christ as He sowed His own life like a seed into the ground.

There’s more to this story. But first, a chorus I’ve been singing from John 12:

See the grain of wheat fall into the ground
Right into the curse, thorns upon His brow
If He would not fall, He remains alone
I hear Him crying out, “I want them as My own”

Jesus is clear in John 12:24, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain”.

Two paths:

Fall into the ground and die, or don’t.

Two outcomes:

A self-preserved life will remain alone. But the life laid down will do the opposite. The life crucified with Christ will reap connection.

Jesus’ life was a seed, a kernel of wheat He deliberately laid down. Down, down, down, the seed falls into the ground.

No one plants a seed dreaming of its death. Seeds are sown with joy—with visions of the harvest to come.

You can hear the timbre of expectation in Jesus’ own voice as He prays before the cross, “Father I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with me where I am”.

Yes, the crucified life reaps connection.

Jesus embraced the cross for the joy set before Him. His eyes were set on the many sons and daughters He would convey into the kingdom of light, to the glory of His Father. His life was raised up from the dead as the Firstborn, bringing a whole family into eternal life.

We throw the anchor of our lives into Christ. We die with Him, we are raised with Him, and we are ushered into a family.

Thank you, Jesus, for sowing the seed of Your life and bringing us into Your family.

Dear Friends, Jesus not only interacted with people in the flesh, but many times Scripture points out that, as He’s having a conversation with someone, He knows the motives of their heart. Try and pull one over on that Teacher. In Luke 10, a lawyer hears Jesus teach how to inherit eternal life—to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself. The lawyer, wanting to justify himself, interrogates Jesus on who exactly is his neighbor....

Hi Friends, Transition in life is tricky. It feels precarious to transfer the weight of your life from one thing to another. Sometimes that “another” even holds the uncertainty of a list of unknowns. Will it hold me? Will there be enough? Will I slip through the crack of “in-between”? If ever there was a people who knew transition, it was the nation of Israel as the Lord brought them out of Egypt and into the land He promised them. And what’s sticking out to me today is the way He provides...

Hi Friends, As we meditated on the events leading up to the cross last month, I sang a phrase that my heart keeps gravitating back to. Here it is: Oh the beauty of the seed as it’s falling. The life of Christ until the cross reads like one long condescension. Lower, lower, lower. From enthroned Lord in Heaven, rightly recognized as God, to woundable, dependent flesh in the arms of a mother. The height differential is so great that it appears He is free-falling. But He’s actually choosing each...
